When my hens were penned I lost a number of chickens to mongooses. I once came out to find 27 twelve week old chicks killed, all bitten in the head. None eaten, just killed, and a mongoose in their pen chewing on one. But now that my chickens are being pastured and thus can avoid the mongooses fairly well, I lose eggs. I've seen a mongoose run across the pasture with an egg in it's mouth. Wow, how can they open their jaws that wide?
Mongooses and chickens don't coexist too well. I trap and kill every mongoose I can. When I go out and find the nest boxes devoid of eggs I know that I have another mongoose.
