I don't cope with living here. I relish living here. I am thankful every day (even in the rain[]) that I am wise enough and lucky enough to have chosen Puna as my place to live. My only regret is that I didn't move here 30 years ago when I first started talking about moving to Hawaii. Cope? I absolutely love the people who are drawn to move here, the local people who are from here, the culture and history, the language, the tropical plants, the lava, the ocean, the sun and the temperature. The only thing I cope with in the last 15 months of full time living here is the most recent days of rain with no break. That's it. and as we all know without the rain, we would look like Kona.
Now for the next part, your experience is that most people here drink? That is not my experience at all. I don't drink and I don't know one person who "drinks to cope with having to be here". If that is your experience, I suggest you expand your horizons and get new friends.
