Maybe more people are starting to think the same thing, Hilo is in a very strategic location for low-key, high tech industry.
A 100 ft by 50 ft industrial building covered with HIT solar panels will produce 1MW. That will be more than enough to power the office environment/light industrial of the fab lab below it. The surplus could be sold to supplement operating income.
While Moon exploration simulation at Mauna Kea is probably coming to an end, there is more notice that Mauna Kea is a very good simulation area for Mars. It seems there could be very mutually beneficial cooperative efforts with NASA and P.I.S.C.E.S. for local rapid prototyping. Too late to submit a fab lab abstract to the P.I.S.C.E.S. conference but concept flyers could be handed out.
