I've done it successfully. A vertical cut flush with the trunk of the mama hapu'u. A pruning saw works well for this. If it's a small pup you can dig a hole and stick it in the ground. If it's larger you can also lay it on the ground horizontally - after a while it will root in and the fronds will turn up - later the new trunk growth will start growing straight up.
