Many septic designers here use the cesspit as part/all of the drainfield... so all is not lost...and the engineering here is different than anywhere else I have been (inc. using cesspits as drainfields ;~) most of the cesspits here do have a solid cover, & most are covered with concrete....so not as much a walking hazard as the old wood boards over the pit used in days of yore...
