Surveillance video from around Hilo town led police to the suspected killer — a man from Illinois.
Curtis Hodges was arrested for second-degree murder at 11 a.m. Friday at a hostel in Hilo.
Hours earlier, officers found the body of a woman nearby.
Police say the 35-year-old suspect is from Shiloh, Ill., and had been living in the area for about a month.
We are still waiting to learn the identity of the victim, and we’ll have more details after a fingerprint analysis.
Police arrested Hodges after taking a look at video footage of the area.
Officials say Hodges has a criminal background.
“We found a lot of evidence on video footage. We haven’t looked through all the video footage yet, but there’s a lot of video footage,” said Capt. Robert Wagner, Hawaii Police Department. “There’s a business in Hilo that has video surveillance cameras and we also have county cameras on top of poles throughout Hilo town.”
Hawaii police say the victim and the suspect didn’t know each other.
