I think the "inexpensive" part is what I take issue with. Anything you build here ends up being fairly "expensive" and that is the reason that I just went ahead and looked for permitted properties. Even really rustic structures out in the jungle are going for 40 or 50k. And since you basically need cash, or -good credit and a personal loan- then I think that amount of money is better served being put towards a more "conventional" property. If you can do all the work yourself, or have a big family that will basically do it for free- then it becomes a different equation, but I don't have that. You can also spend a little more and get a "nicer unpermitted house" for maybe 70 or 80k, but there again- if you have that kind of money (because you won't get a conventional mortgage for the property -more than likely) then you may as well just spend a bit more and get something that will have less worries.
