Island Naturals is a nice store and I like to go there for certain things. I love the fact that they sometimes have cool plants for sale at the entrance. I also like the breathy employees and the sort of last-outpost experience one has there.
I also like to make fun of the people that hang out at the picnic table in front of the store. Obviously, it is not always the same people, but it is usually an unscrubbed collection, often with unwashed children. They are harmless and probably good-hearted Americans who, like the French of the 1970's, choose not to bathe every day. In short: hippies --people who depart from mainstream culture and who may or may not smoke a lot of ganja. I have nothing against hippies. In fact, I knew plenty of hippies in the '60's and was taken for one myself since I had pretty long hair then (I really miss my hair and having an identifiable hair color).
And, I recently CAME TO THE DEFENSE OF THE CROWD AT ISLAND NATURALS. I was in Paia, Maui with a guy and he said that there were a lot of "hippies" there and then, when a scrupulously clean, fresh-faced, blond young man with dread locks and a few tattoos happened a long, he squeezed my arm and said "Look -- there's a hippie now!".
I said, "You call that a hippie? Come to Puna, and I will show you some hippies. We'll go to the health food store. Our hippies are more hippiesh than the ones here".
Now, I know -- it's not a competition. There is PLENTY of room for counter-culture creatures throughout the Hawaiian Islands (except in Hawaii Kai, Princeville, and Sprecklesville). But I think ours are the best.
And so I will laugh my butt off when I see them, but I will wave the foam "number one" finger in the air if anyone tries to suggest their hippies are better than ours.
Unless I am trying to get laid, in which case I will probably just shut up about it.
