Kat, make sure you consider the difficulty of getting out due to downed limbs and trees which will already be happening by the time surge arrives. During hurricanes I always took a chain saw and gas with me. On two occasions I had to chainsaw my way home (fairly extensively). Of course you will be wanting to chainsaw your way out if surge starts to encroach. I always had to work during the storms so was already out. Unless you're in an especially surge prone area (an area that tends to funnel the surge) I would think 17' would be good. Of course you have to add wave height to the surge. Are they giving any surge predictions?
