Holes in Clothes?

My mother always taught me to smell underwear before purchasing it. For instance, it can take years to wash out the smell of Tide. Maybe when you buy underwear, and you use a different soap to wash them out than the previous owner did, switching soaps might cause the fabric to deteriorate more quickly? Like how we are advised to not switch brands of motor oil?
