I've gotta agree with TomK on this one....I watched the video and heard a number of things ( facts ? ) that warrant investigation or analysis before accepting as fact. However, Senator RR's interpretation or restatement of issues and actions, whether factual or fabricated, can not be construed as being opposed to science or an "anti-science" statement. His comments and assertions about releases, health risks, etc. are easily compared to DOH and Federal guidelines to establish validity, which they are not. His speculations about a "major" release having serious health affects and injuries seem to be based on hearsay and rumour. As an aside the East Rift Zone has been measured during this eruptive phase at 400 metric tons per day of SO2 at ambient and upwards to 1850 metric tons per day during active phases, such as now. RR doesn't use many actual numbers but does say at one point 25 ppbillion. For reference, SO2 readings at Halemaumau visitors viewing site were 1-2 ppm (add ,000 for ppb) and the coastal viewing areas so beloved by tourists and residents were up to 75 ppmillion. Think about those levels and the limit placed on PGV of 5 ppbillion. Then ask yourself;
How many tourists have been felled, knocked senseless, lost consciousness, or been hospitalized when subjected to these levels over the last 10, 20 or 30 years or so? BTW, that question is not based on proper investigative methodology (scientific method).
The Senators argument that OSHA standards for factory workers lacks relevance to residents in the area of PGV is fatuous at best. The exposure to SO2 and it's absorption by the human body, whether through a respirator or not, is still a consistent measurement which can be utilized when determining health risks and effects.

PT was referring to statements from anti-geothermal activists that characterize some aspects of geothermal as being (like) fracking. You're right in that we have no hydrocarbons to extract, PT is right in that it is a foolish statement by opponents of geothermal to characterize what is occurring at PGV as fracking. That is a non-scientific based viewpoint with no factual support. However hydraulic fracturing techniques can be used for various purposes including enhancing geothermal systems. Ormat, the parent company of PGV has used existing geothermal brine and reinjected it to enhance the steam resource at a project in Nevada. It has not been done in Hawaii. And....to pull this in from wandering too far off the farm, Senator Ruderman submitted a resolution to ban fracking, as did Councilwoman Brenda Ford.
