When I was in Alaska we were all using 99% deet ..
As I said, I never found it necessary to give it a try. But, I knew many people that swore by it. Plus, I have no problem with the placebo effect. If taking a sugar pill or an aspirin a day cures your cancer for you, who am I to argue with you about it. It's the results, not the vehicle that counts.
While there seem to be very few negative health effects in most users of deet, I shudder at the idea of slathering 99% deet all over my exposed skin. Even in Alaska where one had relatively little exposed skin, I never used anything other than the 30% repellant sticks with the "ice" type material that melted at skin temperature, and then only on rare occasions. I would usually lose the stick long before it ever was used up. It can be applied very lightly. I certainly wouldn't slather that 99% strength of repellant on the amount of skin I have regularly exposed around here.
What you use and how you use it is a personal choice. I choose not to cover my skin with manufactured chemicals.
