Lori, there are no public buses that go to the airport, nor any that run to the Banyan Dr. area. (Yet...they are considering these....but that will be months?years?)
With the new ATA service, I am surprised that the car rentals are not planning to adjust their service hours (You may want to contact the Customer service with a suggestion..."with the new ATA planes landing in Hilo, there are many potential customers that you are not serviceing" type schpeel - Who knows, they may start serviceing the counter later!!!! (but don't hold your breath, there are other planes that land with no rental cars available )
There are a few taxis, but I haven't used them, do see Ace One - 935-8303 and Shaka - 987-1111 around town, but can not give you info on their service
