I've heard that some people use dilute seawater for their crops because of the minerals and nutrients. If you're careful about diluting the salt content in the sand, this could be a plus.

Volcano Village has long been an agricultural area, though limited in crop variety by the conditions at 4000'. Apparently, the ash from the eruptions have made for faster and deeper soil development. I think this effect extends down to Glenwood and maybe Mtn View.
