I bet if Lava Ocean organized a few clean ups on the slow days & donated food to the guys in the "bushes" it might/could improve the image. Consistantly Sponsoring a "Family day" with surf contest and cook out might help. What would 300 hot dogs cost? maybe about the same as a new window.
How about creating an internship program for local kids to learn to Captain a vessel? Through the local schools, Lava Ocean could approach the local kids with a program to teach them seamenship skills. Organize fishing trips for keiki through the 'Y" or Boys Club?
The Puna Skate park has been in desperate need of a local sponsor, step up.
The feeling I'm getting is that any business can't be all "take, take, take" you have to give back.
I'm not into "lava viewing" but I'm not against others that are into viewing lava. I'm not against people making money but I am against greedy companies that use/exploit "community assets" and don't give back.
