Lostboystoy ,Rusty and everyone who is thinking to put a permitted yurt.
Just letting you know that I recommended YurtGirl's business absolutely sincere.
I did my home work and the Yurts of Hawaii was mentioned to me by a very well respected engineer who deals with building department on a regular basis as a reputable business.I was criticizing only the way the information was presented.I stand by what I said on that subject.
But if you really want to permit, please do use a professional.Yurts of Hawaii is one of them.
Here is why I called yurt construction a "mine field".
And here is why I do recommend Yurts of Hawaii for permitting yurts.
Attached are:
1.The personal e-mail to me from BESIGNS,the City-Data.com(Hawaii) forum member.(She posted the facts on that forum. The e-mail has important details).
2. YurtGirl's response on Besigns post,help offered.
Plesase, note that BESIGNS has personal experience living in yurts and loves them.

" It was a learning lesson, the yurt experience for my husband and I.
We paid a design and drafting service a bit over $3000 to assure us that we could build our pacific yurt home and get a permit for it. We even had a signed binding contract. The yurt was denied time and time again by the building dept. I hope you are not working with Accent Design Company to get your drawings because they are the company we basically in my opinion donated $3000+ to in order for this whole ordeal to blow up for us.
We were confidently assured that they could get us a permit, "NO problem..." we paid and then a year later were stuck with the 2 beautiful yurts sitting under a car port on our property ...
Well as i have told you we were never given a permit. The building dept claimed it was not to code and basically classified it as a glorified tent.
We were able to sell the 30' and 16'yurts we had purchased and move on. I know that the yurt is a wonderful structure to live in. My brother in law is still living in the 24 ft pacific yurt . The yurt is 12 years old by now and still in good condition."

"I am sorry for your problems there. We had some issues as well when we first started the business, it seemed there was one person in the building department who arbitrarily refused to permit yurts, and he just happened to be the one that most residential permits would filter through. However, after many meetings and a lot of digging, we discovered that the building departments policy on permitting yurts is that they ARE permittable. As long as they have 2 doors (as the latticework walls don't allow for openable windows as a rule), 7' walls and a few other requirements. We can assist in this process even after the fact, but as you have already sold..."

P.S.I agree that the yurts are wonderful inside, could be even fancy if you invest enough.I still think there is one feature the regular house can not compete-portability.(In case of the lava coming...)
I've chosen the regular structure because it is less expensive in the long run (insurance , parts replacement and shipping).
I might be wrong. And your experience could be different.
Lostboystoy, Rusty, good luck to you in your venture.
If you get the yurt, please share your experience.
I sincerely wish you luck.
