Noel, treated lumber here is ONLY borate treated, not ACQ or other exterior treatments... the borate treatment is for termites & such, but is for weather protected use only. All cuts & penetrations must be treated with borate at site 1. to comply with manufacturers rec. for warranty & 2.to have any chance of the wood withstanding termites. (there is a good article that does question whether the leaching is as bad, but #1 is still there... link: http://www.taunton.com/finehomebuilding/...decks.aspx) There is no wood avaiable on island labeled for exterior, weather exposed applications.... (composite decking materials are available... but nothing structural that we have found..)
SOOOO.... if you want to build a weather exposed wood structure, you will need to bring wood treated to withstand weather exposure.... Plus all of the approved fasteners (I'm not sure if they sell the new stuff here)
You could probably sell any leftovers... I know we are having the dickens of a time trying to figure out future plans for lanai posts that will not be consummed by the voracious appetites of the termites!
Does this note mean you are post-haste here? (notice you didn't come for a visit last weekend so we must have a re-celebration when you get here
