Positive things Newcomers bring to Puna
#24
Newcomers can bring:

1. A more humane attitude toward animals. Most newcomers get no pleasure out of seeing chickens shred each other, and feel that dogs and cats are part of the family.
2. Environmental awareness. Some newcomers are aware that you can bespoil an island very quickly and they want to make sure that doesn't happen.
3. A stronger organizational sense: Hawaii is at the latitude of lassitude. As with other warm, languid places, it is sometimes hard to summon the energy needed to meet the challenges of living on an island. Newcomers are motivated --for awhile-- to make it a better place.
4. New blood. The Portugese brought the ukulele and malasadas, the Japanese brought zen and rice, the Mexicans (or maybe it was someone else) brought paniolos who brought guitars which became the Hawaiian slide guitar that screams "You are in Hawaii" and other off-islanders brought pineapples and plumerias.
5. I will be bringing a quirky charm, spotted doggies, a blender, a tenor ukulele, a perfumed pen, and probably by the time I get there lots and lots of gray hair.
