Good idea Glen.
To combat something you need to know more about it. Is there any info freely available on the numbers and types of burglaries in Puna? What's usually stolen?
I think it's a good idea to get an alarm system and/or a dog. If either isn't feasible then get signs warning of an alarm system and/or a dog. Give the crooks a reason to go elsewhere.
Also, set stuff up so it looks like there's someone at home. Have the radio playing, put shoes outside the front door, make it difficult to see if the car is in the garage or not.
Hide valuables in your house, if they're portable enough. I once heard that the last place they'll look is in the kitchen.
