When I lived on the mainland (a cursed phrase, I know...) we had a work coop among a group of 6 neighbors, where hours were accounted for in a debit / credit system instead of money. The same could be done on a food basis, with running totals kept in a ledger. Rotating members of the coop would be responsible for sitting at a table to check people in and out.
In our work coop, we went into it with the understanding that everybody's time was of the same value- engineer, housewife, whatever- an hour was an hour. For a food coop, the same would have to be true- a pound is a pound. With a ledger system, if someone is a contributing member when able, they can get through the lean times. It would also be up to the membership if members were allowed to go negative in the ladger.
A "food bank" on a local level.
