A break open would be carried empty, broken and cradled or shouldered. A pump, bolt or semiauto would be carried with a sling, slung over the shoulder or if no sling, shouldered with a locked open chamber. A pump, bolt or semiauto can also be cradled locked open in a nonthreatening manner. If hunting and approached by a game officer, it is best or at least courteous to assume one of those methods of carry. Any of those methods telegraph "no threat intended". If you are one of those folks just plain skeered by any sight of any gun, I can't help you.
