Kimo, The road that you have noticed is the PRIVATE drive to their houses and yards and ranchlands. They do allow people of their acquaintance to visit their house & property, and though I have never been invited, I do know people that have been. They seem like a very nice & fairly open family, willing to donate much to their community... much more than many others in Puna.
Are you willing to open up YOUR drive, and yard to people you do not know, even on a limited basis? That is what you are saying in your post. Just think, the street in front of your land is public access, you have reasoned that people should have access to it from your back yard.....
ETA: many who walk in do not stay stictly on the 'path'.... even this straying goes onto their private lands... and yet even the county rec. dept. has organized hikes through this land. All I have ever heard is that the people are requested to respect the space, not litter & stay off of their private yards.... something you would think people would not even have to be asked, when visiting...
