Lava Viewing - Open On New Years??

Hey, do you think there was enough activity to make it interesting to check out?

considering that kilauea is currently in an extended deflation event (3 days now), it's possible that unless there is a rapid re-occupation of the rift plumbing system within the next few hours that there will be little to no activity down at the coast this evening.

you might want to keep an eye on http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/deformation.html and when you see the electronic tiltmeter plot indicate inflation (when the plot line begins to rise) at POC (blue line) you can figure it will be a few more hours after that when the activity at the coast will pick up (assuming the tube system that carries the lava from puu oo to the coast remains intact)

though like you observed, for the uninitiated even a little glow can go a long way, so going down just to pass the time could be fun regardless
