Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist

Shockwave rider, did you expect anything less or more, from our police and military state? They are drilled to protect their own, especially if they are still cashing checks retired or not. Accident's do happen to everyone, sometimes we can learn the most from our accidents. Hope the great state of Hawaii can see our neglected roads with a new perspective, for our visitor's and keiki of the aina.

I get it. You are an ignorant jerk, incapable of admitting you are wrong!

If you read the Non-Hawaii versions of the news about this man, you would know he was an avid bicyclist, was clearly well versed in the proper safe manner of bike riding and was the innocent victim here.

Now, as to who jumped to conclusions here, pog, it was you.

Now further, I am going to offer my jump to a conclusion:

Was the cop tested for DUI? - NO
DRUGS? - NO
TALKING/TEXTING ON CELL PHONE? - NO

WILL COP BE PERSONALLY SUED? - YES
WILL COUNTY BE SUED? - YES

Your blatantly ignorant "blame the victim" here raises some interesting possibilities, such as:

"Well, your Honor, the idiot got himself killed. He simply put his body in the way of my bullet."

You clearly are more of the problem here than that of any solution!

Ordinary citizens would not only be tested, but the results mentioned in the news for all to see. Presumption is that an officer of the law is held to a higher standard and therefore beyond reproach...

Whoa Shockwave, that's choke words you putting in my mouth ...

I'd be more than happy to give you my thoughts on Maritime Colregs*** but that would be off topic and that would just wind you up more.

At 63, he may not have been able to turn around or hear as well.

Positive thing is his work continues posthumously.

*** Here is one for you all.

Rule 5 requires that "every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing circumstances and conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

going to give the benefit of the doubt here...

Pog, perhaps a better way to express yourself might have been something along the lines of, say...

"i would like to remind everyone to please be careful out there and ride your bike defensively at all times. despite the traffic laws you can't always rely on drivers to provide safe conditions on our roadways for bicyclists and pedestrians".

maybe that's more of what you meant rather than focusing on the as of yet totally unknown particulars of fault in this particular case?

"It seems like a whole bunch of you will make up any "facts" you can think of to make it the cyclist's fault, starting with the "Acting Battalion Chief" Capt. Whitman when he spoke to the press right after the collision." - Shockwave Rider

Hardly a fact, when stated by the ABC (or is it back to Capt. again) Whitman as "likely"!

Still trying to imply that he is trying to protect the officer, you got a real issue dude! Go see a doctor or something!

jrw,

"Tom K forgive me but I guess you would just run the bikes down?"

Forgive me if I am old fashioned, but I would approach a blind bend knowing that I couldn't see around the corner. Therefore, I would plan to drive appropriately so that if I met an obstruction after the bend, I wouldn't have to swerve into the oncoming lane and therefore become a danger to other innocent road users.

And if this doesn't compute, no, I would not run down the bikers, because (1) it's likely I'll have spotted them before they disappeared around the corner, and (2) my speed would have allowed me to stop within the distance I can see in front of me.

Unlike every other incident, media coverage doesn't even include the disclaimer "not known if speed/alcohol were factors".

We don't know what we don't know.
