Recent flow activity
It is flowing a bit North of North-East

Yes, I did see the northeast label. But dakine said it was good stuff, and I'm confused because NE would seem to be headed towards population which is not good. So I thought I may have read it wrong.

Hey Kathy.. slow getting back.. I was working the farm today..

I said good stuff in that there is a wealth of info if you put it all together. Sometimes HVO's updates don't paint as clear a picture as this one. From the new collapse pit at Puu Oo itself.. future lava lake? to the rapid advance of the lava flows.. and that rapid stuff is fast in that for most of the last month the flows have been staying close to the new vent, but in the last few weeks they've obviously taken to stretching out again. And yes unimpeded flows.. i.e. no forest to burn through is the ticket. As to flow direction.. at the moment its favoring a path a little more south than before.. which is saying more Pahoa side than Ainaloa.. but that's all way too premature to be of significance.. meaning its still heading in the same general direction of 130 somewhere Hilo side of Pahoa. As in all's good!

Thanks dakine, I appreciate the interpretation. [Smile]
After I last posted I figured out what you meant by good stuff. It made sense.
Let's hope the flow goes where it's reasonably benign to humans.

I'm conflicted. The fury of Nature is astonishing and beautiful but the direction is a definite concern. Glad to live here though, in any case. And I'm fairly certain the lava doesn't give a damn how I feel!

Edited to offer thanks to all who link to interesting and informative websites, and explain them to we who are less educated in such things...

Yes, it is moving fast. But on the other hand it is filling in where it flowed last... I suspect this will probably go on for awhile maybe 10 or so times before it fills up high enough to start flowing South again. I am sure while it's doing there there will be plenty of close calls as in will it eventually make it to the sea this time going down the east slope. Then maybe it might start filling in and start flowing more North into Hilo.

Just my observation.

It's always interesting to watch nature work it's magic.

Interesting ideas, thanks all.
Re it heading into Hilo, I'm not aware that any Kilauea flow has ever hit Hilo. I believe the lava in Hilo is all from Mauna Loa. Is that wrong?

This link may help - http://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1992/2193/

If you click on the map you can see the boundaries between the various volcanoes. I don't think Kilauea is a threat to Hilo, mainly for topographical reasons, but you can decide that for yourself. You'll probably have to zoom in a lot to see all the details and unfortunately that overwhelmed by PC, but maybe it'll help.

Well, when it get's 10K feet it might be a threat to Hilo. But, what I tried to say was, that it would flow in the direction of Hilo, North. That means more towards Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland etc...etc... but who knows. It just keep building up and up and eventually it will have to come down the side that is the lowest side.

I'm not expert and don't pretend to be. I've always said it's anyone's guess to where it gonna go, but it's gotta go someplace that's for sure!!! I guess we'll all just have to the play the "WAIT AND SEE" game. Hopefully it's a good long wait.
