Carol,
I will pass on the idea to Fran. Can they work during school hours as interns as other than Saturdays that is the only time she is open?
Fran got back to me and said she just cannot work longer hours than she does now. Most of her business is people coming by in the morning to pick up puffs to take to the office. If she altered her hours, she could not serve them. She also suggested that if you want an order to call a day ahead and pick it up at the lunch hour, or even very early am, as she is there earlier than . Next weeks new flavors will be banana with chocolate ganache and toasted mac nuts and blueberry cheesecake.

Devany,
The students do their internships during school hours and weekends depending on the internship. They would be scheduled for a block of hours daily, or could work all day on Fridays when they don't have classes. I know of several juniors and seniors who would be really excited to work with her, and the school tries to make it as easy as possible on the mentors.
As far as hours goes, maybe she will reach the point where she has someone she can trust to keep the store open in the afternoon after she goes home. I get to school at 6:30 or 7 and don't leave until sometime between 3 and 5, except Fridays when staff have meetings all day, maybe I can get in there on a Friday.

Mom and I used to go to Mimi's quite a lot...anyone know of that chain? The decor has reminders of Bourbon Street and the Mardi Gras...the food was uncommonly good for a chain restaurant (except The Olive Garden which I really miss). Amazing French Onion Soup - which I really want some now...yummmm

without going through the entire thread, i'd like to see a california pizza kitchen here. it would give cafe pesto a good run for their money. we ate there last night--just mediocre imo. the service, or i should say, the lack of service was terrible. it was not terribly busy when we arrived and took approximately 20 minutes before our waiter approached us. we were not offered to have our water refreshed until we were already done. we had to ask the hostess to tell our waiter that we wanted our bill--some 15 minutes after finishing the meal. the pizza was underseasoned and the pasta dish i ate was over seasoned. the best part of the evening was meeting a couple visiting from nevada--great conversation.

I think maybe you were unlucky, kani-lehua, or I've been lucky. I would have been unhappy with waiting 20 minutes for a waiter show up, absolutely. I've had the good fortune to get very good service at Cafe Pesto, some of the best in Hilo. There are always exceptions with wait staff.
I don't think of Pesto as a pizza place, even though clearly it offers lots of pizza; in fact I never order pizza there. I agree their pizza is far from the best in town. I like their salads, especially the Blue Caesar, and they have yummy soups, and desserts. Some of their entrees and pupus are quite good.
Hilo Bay cafe has a French onion soup. You might enjoy it as you are jonesing for some. I love it myself, and have had theirs a few time. It's not as good as what I had in a French restaurant I used to work in, but it's tasty.
I do like the pizza at the Kona Brewery, if you ever go over there check it out, nice use of local mushrooms, cheese, tomatoes, etc..

My last visit to the Hilo Bay Cafe (for the french onion soup and Ahi ceasar salad) I had such slow and indifferent service I may never go back. The waiter basically ignored me, the table next to me were seated after I placed my order and were served and gone before I got my meal. I could understand it if I had a complicated special, but soup and salad? And then I was overcharged for my drinks by $2 each! It used to be my favorite place to take myself out if I got stuck in Hilo for dinner, but not now, Jay's is my new favorite, they don't treat a women dining alone like a leper, and the Calamari Salad is great!

Went to the Hilo Pond restaurant for Sunday Lunch after reading Devany's writeup. The mahi mahi fish and chips was delicious ($11.95). They even served it in an English newspaper basket with English Malt Vinegar, home made tarter sauce and ketchup on the side. Service was excellent. They even made a very tasty pina colada ($7.50). I think the good food and service is catching on. We went there just after it opened at 11am....and by noon the parking lot was full. The prices are moderate. About the same as eating lunch at Cafe Pesto or the Hilo Bay Cafe.

Just have to admit, the absolutely WORST French onion soup I've ever had in my life was in FRANCE.

Glad you too had a good experience Macuu! I generally like to give a restaurant 3 or more visits before making a judgement on a restaurant. In this case I had only been there once, but I was really impressed with the service and ambiance. Most of the food was quite good too. I agree on the pricing, pretty much the same as Hilo Bay Cafe (which has far less ambiance)or Cafe Pesto. All three have fairly good food. I think I would also add Kaleos to the mix of our better restaurants in that genre.

Carol,
I agree on Cafe Pesto service. It is spotty, more than consistently bad though. I have had some good service there and some horrible service. If any place has horrible service more than 3 times for me, I don't go back for at least a year, by then usually bad servers/managers have moved on. While it is a long drive and not as "pretty" the Cafe Pesto in Kawaihea seems to have better service over all and the food I have had there has never once disappointed me.
One thing that really impressed me was that everyone in the restaurant seemed to really care about our experience there. The manager and hostess came to our table a few times to see how we were enjoying our evening and to thank us for coming. Even the bus boys said good night and thank you to us when we were leaving. It only takes a tiny bit of extra kindness to make people feel truly welcome.
And as you know Carol, I ditto your comments on the Calamari Salad at Jay's. Once they really figure out what they are going to be and focus on menu development in that realm, they will be a force to reckon with in Hilo's dining scene. I wish that there was a place with nice outside dining, preferably on the water, but a nice garden setting would be acceptable. Hilo Pond comes closest to that now with window seating and open windows, but wouldn't it be great to have a place with the scenery and ambiance that the Yacht Club has AND one that serves great food too? Maybe a wood burning oven in the center of the lanai with an open kitchen concept? Ah... we can dream anyway.
