Asked if he thinks a new lease should be granted, he said, "As of today, I can say no." If that meant closure of the access road, Freitas said that would be OK because he wouldn't need to return unless he felt called up there.
In other words, the mountain should be so sacred that nobody is allowed to visit.
Perhaps the anti-TMT crowd has more in common with DHHL than we realize.

I'm having a hard time understanding all of this.
1) Freitas will only visit the summit, even without an access road if he's called there. Did he ever visit before there was no access road?
2) One of the other people supporting him is Kealoha Pisciotta who not only worked as a telescope operator at the JCMT, (and therefore used the access road), she will need the access road to visit long-passed family members. Without an access road, I don't see how she can do that. Let's just ignore the fact she had no problem using the road to do her job.
3) Pisciotta is on record saying the existing telescopes shouldn't be decommissioned because the amount of (de)construction work will be more damaging than building a new telescope.
4) Freitas wants them all gone no matter what.
There you go. Make whatever sense of that you want to.

TomK, when it comes down to the bottom line these people have few solutions and tons of complaints. One persons solution will just be another's complaint.
Some of the comments on the article are worth reading though.

Corrupt, hypocritical proponents of the Stone Age.
Most of whom should be in jail for fraud, extortion and general corruption
and misuse of all the funds they have access to. (Both OHA and DHHL).[}

You want the Big Island to censor videos on youtube?
Yes, it's free to drive up to the top of MK, thanks to the generosity of the telescopes, making the summit accessible to everyone.

Therefore, nobody appreciates the value. Perhaps they should charge $75 at the gate.

Is this what tourists should be doing with Pele's Lava?

By the looks of this new slow moving flow heading NE. It may take some time to move down the mountain due to the gradual slope and its terrain. What I am seeing though is a wider path, that spreads out farther. Hawaiian acres, Ainaloa, eventually Paradise park look like the eventual path. So is there any way to cut trails from say 1 0r 2 road in Hawaiian acers, Would be a great adventure. Personally I have walked well over 12 miles roundtrip to sit next to the flows down in Kalapana at least 2 dozen times. And looking at the distance through those woods right now looks a whole lot shorter?. The flow does not seem to be in the VNP so how possible could this be now?. If I go for it, should I leave markers along the way, and what kind of markers?. Down Kalapana I used the glow sticks and large built fires to guide directions when there is no moon. Anyway this may not be lunch on the crater, but the flow does cook a good steak by close hangers. And the sounds, sights, and warmth are just some of the amazements.
Guess it's ok for Gyp to go out and play with lava.

If you've ever wondered what Gypsy looks like, look up "hypocrite" in an Illustrated Dictionary.
The ski hill was another classic. And stealing jobs from locals of course.
