It is often a lost thought but communication does not require winning.
Assume the best and ask questions.

One of the potential NOAA cuts is the Mauna Loa CO2 monitoring office.

Let's bury our heads in the sand for a few years, shall we?

Wao - By middleground I meant that I would like to see two opposing sides trying to understand the other point of view.
While I appreciate your optimism, I'm not sure there is enough shared reality for both sides to find a common understanding.
Side 1 - Everyone should have equal access to healthcare and education.
Side 2 - Anyone not on my side is a Satanic pedophile that needs to be Gitmo'ed.
Middle ground - Everyone should be Gitmo'ed where they will receive healthcare and a Satanic education. ;)

Silly, yes, but both those sides are actual talking points from our political representatives so, yeah, a bit hard to reconcile, but let me know what you come with. Wishing you safe travels in the meantime.

Of course communication does not require winning - I'm sorry if you think that is what's happening here. But two-way communication does require listening, and when the other side notes you may have not read something correctly, communication requires not putting fingers in one's ears and squeezing one's eyes shut and saying nah nah nah I know everything, and when the other side notes that such behavior is pretty silly and childish, communication requires not pouting and then playing the victim in order to avoid admitting one may have been wrong. You know, if two-way communication was actually the goal, and not just demanding a safe space to shout hot takes (may I suggest the comments section of one's favorite right-wing echo chamber instead?)

Yeah, the hits keep coming - no lunch and now no new CO2 records, PrimalEdge just can't catch a break. (probably deserves it tbh, payback for some past transgression like caring about the general health and well-being of people and their environment ;)

USGS website is down. Not just the site for Kīlauea, the entire usgs.gov site. Another cut?

How long until the construction at the park on the new visitor center gets stopped?

Yup. Back now. Short term thing. Phew.

We are acquainted with a volunteer at VNP. She says morale is quite low among the Park workers these days, for what that's worth.
When I called their number a couple weeks ago, believe it was the 6011 number, it was somewhat of a surprise that a person actually answered promptly and attempted to be helpful.

Which of course gets you a rebuttal from the trolls whose mommies convinced them that they were oh so smart and must be right because all of the channels are saying the same thing don't cha know.  You need to listen to them, they don't need to listen to you Rob.  They alone have all the answers and get their jollies trolling local community chat rooms.  Winning!
I wish you all the best

Impacts to astronomy in Hawaii due to NSF cuts
https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/202...-cutbacks/
"The National Science Foundation, the federal agency that funds science and engineering research, fired 10% of its workforce in February to comply with an executive order aimed at reducing the federal workforce.

Since then, rumors have abounded that Trump, amidst a long string of federal downsizing, was eyeing deeper cuts for NSF and NASA, with billions of dollars and thousands of employees potentially on the chopping block.

With federal funding up in the air, several Maunakea observatories that rely on NSF grants could be impacted, said Doug Simons, director of the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy."
