This is what I was referring to:
The Digital Transition

What Is the Public Benefit of the DTV Transition?
What Is the Difference Between Analog and DTV Broadcasting?
What Are the Laws Regarding DTV?
When Did Stations Go Digital?
What Do I Need for DTV Picture Reception Over-The-Air?
What Is the Public Benefit of the DTV Transition?

Bullwinkle, the information on that link you provided is correct. VHF and UHF are in use in the United States, including here in Puna.

Terracore, make sure your antenna is compatible with both Hi-VHF and UHF for this area. If you get one or the other, you will only get half of the channels available to you. You should also make sure it clears the tree line for best reception.

FYI,

I contacted Antennas Direct and they looked up my location and topography and recommended the ClearStream C2 and cautioned me against the db models and the ClearStream C4 as they were UHF only.

Cool - I'd be interested how that model works out for you - it is much smaller and easier on the eye than the db8

this morning I am able to see: 4.1, 4.2, 9.1, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 11.2, 13.1, 13.2

that is on the db8 2 tv sets connected with a non amplified 3 way connection.

I am using a DB 4 mounted on my roof. 14th in HPP. We get 4.1, 4.2, 9.1, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 11.2, 14.1.
We also purchased a Magnavox 515 DVR/DVD-R. We can record show off the air just like the good old days of VHS but can now edit out the commercials and archive them on a DVD. We bought it from Walmart with free shipping to Kea'au for $180.
Doesn't record in HD but it is great to be able to skip commercials.
Wanted to buy another one but they are discontinued. No word on when a replacement model will be available in the north american market.
So nice not to be paying monthly fees under a contract to any dish or cable company. And unlike Tivo there is no monthly fee on the DVR. Also the machine is our so we get to keep the recordings and the machine if we move elsewhere.

What we lack in channels we make up for in Netflix or Hulu.

Sorry for the delay. I ordered this off of amazon and they shipped it PARCEL POST (not amazon, the merchant). Amazingly, it survived OK.

These are the 11 channels I get with the ClearStream C2: 4.1, 4.2, 9.1, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 11.2, 13.1, 13.2, 14.1, 45

It is mounted on a 10' pole leaning up against a canopy from HPM. No signal boosters etc. Still a pretty raw installation with the coax snaking through the house out a window.

My question is... is 11 channels the limit and should I give up and go for the permanent installation or should I continue tweaking etc trying for other channels? Frankly I'm impressed with 11 free channels.

45 is CBS. I haven't noticed if it's different than the other CBS channel. I get 4 additional signals too weak to pull in. 28.8, 28.9 and 51.8 and 51.9. If I get time I'll try to figure out what they are and whether or not its worth it to try and get them.

Of those 11 channels you mention, are they all coming in clear? Usually, 4.1, 4.2, 10.1, 10.2, 11.1, 11.2 and 9 are the ones to come in clear. I have never had any luck pulling in the NBC signal.

At any rate, I don't know if something has happened to my antennae because for the past few days, I have not been able to get anything.

Yes, the NBC channel is clear. The only channel that doesn't come in completely clear is 45. It appears to be an analog signal which is good because its not "all or nothing" like digital- it comes in just like TV did in the "old days". I can clear it up by aiming the antenna but when I do that I lose some of the digital signals, so I just live with a little graininess.

In order to get all 11 channel I needed a fairly precise aim on the antenna. I used google maps to mark my address on the island and used the information to make my best guestimation of where Hilo was in relation to my address (was off from what I "thought" it was) then aimed the antenna directly at Hilo.

Here's a channel list I found that explains some of the signals like 41 and 50 that the TV finds but I can't get to come in. Since they are duplicates I'm not going to waste my time trying to get them:

Regarding your channels not coming in, did you try rescanning (auto program). In the digital world if your antenna moves you have to reprogram in order to get the channels back. Another culprit could be the coax. I notice on mine if it isn't screwed into the back of the tv PERFECTLY I lose some of my channels.
