HPP -BUS ROUTE BEGINS 4/1 with 3 routes!
#11
the best bus route can be calculated using a mathematical equation. the route would be the one that provided the minimum sum of the distance from each lot to the bus route.

i would guess that would be down makuu, across some street lower than 5th, and back up kaloli. the longest distance anyone would have to walk would be the distance between paradise and makuu or paradise and kaloli.

However, these are the only 2 places where a bus can pull off the road to stop and let passengers on and off. Maybe some of the HPP churches could step up and offer their parking for park and rides, unless they do the Hui is the only place for that.

Down to Beach on Maku'u Cross 1st (Paved)
Up Paradise to 31st cross to Kaloli down to bottom of K Rd. (Kaloli pt).
Back up Kaloli to 22nd head across to Shower and out to highway.
I think once at 6:30AM and return 6TongueM. (I'm not sure the Highway schedule but it would have to match that)
During the day if they really wanted to help... a "Dial-A-Ride" service for the park that
takes riders to the Highway available maybe 2x mid day. If no one calls, no waste of gas.

So I assume they are going to make the Pahoa bus go threw HPP?

Anyone know when they expect to have service to HPP? The heleon site has not mention of route changes or maps going into HPP as of yet.

Also, I would imagine that if they make the pahoa bus go threw HPP it would add about half hour to 45 minutes on to the schedule...So the first stop in the morning is 5:50 so those people would have to be at the stop @ 5AM. That's brutal.

You do know that HPP is by far the biggest subdivision in Puna, right? Many times bigger than Pahoa in population.

Oh, so we can pay road taxes but we can't have them used on our roads? No problem, just refund the money.

Paul are you talking to me? Uh, I think the first stop isn't even in Pahoa. But what would I care? I don't use the bus. Just saying would be hard on the folks for the first stop.

You are not paying Road Taxes, that money is for maintaining your roads that you agreed to pay when buying your lot in HPP. I am sure you signed the disclosures when purchasing your lot.

HPP is a private subdivision and receives no money from the State or County of Hawaii to maintain the common areas, including roads. The Hawaii State Supreme Court ruled that it is the responsibility of all lot owners to pay an annual road maintenance fee, the amount of which is to be determined by the Board of Directors. The fees are used for grading & material replacement on the lateral roads, the repair of the paved main roads, mowing & other types of vegetation control, sign repair and replacement, the removal of dead animals and rubbish left on the road sides, insurance & tree trimming.

While I agree it's a good idea to send a bus down to HPP to service the people there. One has to ask, is it a good idea to send a public owned bus down private owned (maintained) streets?

Road wear is the fourth power of weight, so that public bus does far (as in, orders of magnitude) more damage to the road than, say, a Honda Civic.

Every driver who lives in a subdivision where they pay road fees also pay gas taxes that go to maintain the roads in all the other subdivisions. We pay double and as I posted elsewhere there really aren't enough lots in Puna without road fees for all the people who live here.

While road wear is related to weight, you are comparing apples and orange when you compare a bus that holds 40 people to a Honda civic, it should be compared to 40 Honda Civics.

The paper last week said they will be adding these in the future, hopefully by March, to only 3 OF THE ROUTES....not all of the Pahoa routes.

Normally the changed routes are not posted until the day of the new route... and the bus drivers normally have a printed copy they hand out & remind riders of, the week prior to a route change...

I imagine that this route change was from input at the meeting in early January that started this thread...so if you have route input, hopefully you were at the meeting...if you didn't make it...well.... that would probably be the place to make the route suggestions in the future

Added: I image that they may not be bringing in the large bus to the HPP subdivsion, most likely the small route bus (both because the large bus is normally at/over capacity & the road weight, wear & size issues of the larger bus vs. the smaller bus...) - & the fact that that they stated they are adding HPP to 3 routes & that mirrors the small route bus that is already in service...
