mail delivery in HPP
#11
mac nut, no offense meant, but you say "there is talk" and then you say "I have heard" but you don't say who you've heard this information from. I would like to know who is doing the talking that you are hearing. Some specifics would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't think the vandalism of HPP boxes is why the post office is going broke, an unrealistic pension mandate imposed by Congress is where they are bleeding millions.

Our wait for a HPP box was over 2 years, our name was supposedly at the top of the list for a year, but after experiencing the inconvenience of getting mail in Keaau I absolutely do not want to have getting my mail make my already long afternoon commute home even longer. That detour to Kea'au for mail means getting stuck in the parking lot known as the Kea'au zipper for an extra 30-45 minutes.

I remember oh it must have been ten years ago there was preliminary discussions about moving the Makuu Drive boxes to the neighborhood center but relocating mailboxes along our other main roads posed a bigger challenge, because all available land is reserved exclusively for recreational use. Mac nut it seems like you have good intentions, and hear a lot of things! This third party info/rumors doesn't cut it. It would be nice to have the post office,Mail and Ship or the Hui, to comment with facts!

I thought I heard something about a central location by the fire station where all the boxes would be relocated to. I read this somewhere maybe in the Conch newsletter.

No offense taken. The owner of mail and ship in Keauu is moving to a larger building and has the option of adding more boxes there. Since most of his current customers live in HPP he is researching the need for more boxes

There is a big difference between "researching the need for more boxes" and trying to engineer forcing people to move from receiving their mail in US Postal Service boxes in their own neighborhood to being the captive customers of a private business. Exactly what is going on here? Is this Kea'au business owner trying to jump the shark here by creating a rumor on the coconut wireless that he hopes will turn into a self fulfilling prophecy?

This whole meme of "I have heard" and "there is talk" smells a little fishy to me. I pay pretty close attention to the local news sources and I had heard not a peep about this issue of the boxes being vandalized so often that they are bankrupting the Post Office, nor had I heard someone was hit or nearly hit, getting their mail. Where do these kinds of rumors get started anyway?

I've actually seen the accident where an SUV took out the mail boxes close to the top of Paradise during a rainy day. I don't know about the person almost being hit. I've also personally seen the other damaged boxes which were obviously vandalised along the same road. These aren't just "rumors".

Carol, I pay for a box in Keaau and live in HPP. my sources are just talking to the people that use that location as we cross paths. Since I am retired I just check my mail every other day or so when i need to shop in Keaau and I can plan my trip in the non rush hour times. I realise that for those that commute to hilo daily this is not an option, but I also know there are many retired folks that this works well for and is safer for large packages etc. Just dont be suprised if you get a letter from the usps sometime saying you must now pick up your mail at the keaau post office, general delivery. Not saying it will happen, just saying it could!
