Best Poke
#11
Our family favorite poke is also home made. My eldest daughter learned from her local friends years ago that poke is one of those dishes that can be "created" as your own and incorporate the flavors you love based on your tastes and what's in the fridge today.

We have family get togethers here in Arizona, just like we did in Hawaii. There are now four generations here plus some Aunty's and cousins that join us and several times a year we do our own island luau. Our table often includes our humble homemade versions of poke, spicy tuna rolls, spam musubi, "kalua" style pork, rice, finadene sauce, chicken kelaguen, smoked salmon, azeka style ribs, and teriyaki chicken. ONO for sure.

Our favorite poke recipe is chopped fresh Ahi tuna with chopped cucumber, avocado and thinly sliced green pepper. Lightly seasoned to taste with sesame seeds, sprinkles of organic sesame oil, shoyu, sprinkle of sea salt. Very light dash of lemon and sirachi pepper sauce are liked by some of the family. Not so traditional maybe but we have an abundance of avocado and cucumbers in Arizona and they have just become a permanent part of our favorite poke recipe.

OMG...I'm starving now!

I occasionally like to splurge and am willing to spend 10 bucks a lbs for the stuff... Tho on this island I can usually get by with 8 bucks a lbs. I've tried it from every store, Malama market (limited choices here in Pahoa), KTA, Safeway, etc...etc... I know you can get the cheaper Marlin stuff if your cash strapped.

Anyway... I heard a lot of good things about Poke To your taste. So I stopped in the other day... And a little bowl of Ahi with a sign that said 15 dollars a lbs! I stood around for awhile looking at the bowl of fish (granted the fish looked good) but Ahmmmm... No... Not for me so I got in my car and headed for Suisan (half off!). Sigh.

If you want to really cheap out? Nothing like getting your fish at 2 bucks a lbs Aku (roadside). Cutting it up *cubed* Sea Salt, red pepper flakes, Some dark sesame oil on a bed of finely chopped cabbage and some chopsticks! Smile Tho if it's avocado season even better! Smile sprinkled sesameseed on everything! and a good cold beer. Nothing like it!
