there frequently isn't a dropoff charge between Kona and Hilo airports, so shop around.

Kapohocat - I generally fly with American and haven't tried the Hawaiian flight you mention. I tend to avoid really long domestic flights if I possibly can. My usual trip to London is ITO-HNL-LAX-BOS-LHR with an overnight stop in Boston. This gets me into London in the evening which means I can sleep overnight there and I find this schedule really helps overcoming the jet lag quickly.
Incidentally, for those thinking about the one way rental between Kona and Hilo, both Enterprise and Alamo seem to be the companies that don't have a drop-off charge. The cost is usually $30-40 (depends on the day of the week). Also, the enterprise place on Kanoelehua Ave has a local shuttle service but I don't know if their airport office does.

HNL-Europe is still on the cards if they open up flying over the North Pole. Get ready for a new flood of tourists if they do, and vastly decreased travel times to Europe (13 hours?). Or am I dreaming?

Paul - I remember having this discussion before (maybe not here) and I suspect it won't happen. This is just my personal opinion, but the possibility of direct flights between Europe and Hawaii came about due to some changes in the ETOPS rules which define how far a twin-engined jet (such as the 777 or 787) can fly from an airport in case of an engine failure. By definition though, those rules only apply to twin-engined jets, so the direct route has always been open to airlines flying four-engined jets, yet that direct route has not been put on any airline schedule, so think it's driven by demand which likely just isn't there. Maybe the 787 will change things, it's smaller than a 747 so might address the demand issue, but personally just can't seeing it happen any time in the near future.

Tom, you could be right. I think I remember taking such a flight a long time ago but I wouldn't swear on it.
I think there is demand, it's also a good way to get from Eastern Asia to Europe. The market will decide, assuming there are no more legal barriers. |
