Whoops wrong post!!!!! Apology apology!! Cars on brain for a moment. I always walk with a stick, never though of loading it up!!all aside, I feel the woman's pain, as I too, was ripped up by a shepherd, hence the stick. Speedy recovery and justice for the penalty of letting a dog run loose. I still have trouble understanding what the owner is so afraid of he/she needs an animal like that, but to each his/her own...
Are you a human being, or a human doing?

I find it hard to believe that some people don't care if their dogs bite someone; not that I doubt it though. I would sue the heck out of someone whose loose dog bit me. If nothing else you would think they would care about that.
It drives me crazy to drive around and see these poor dogs tied up on a 10 foot (if they are lucky) chain, day after day. They get no, or very little human contact; it's no wonder that they get aggressive or go nuts if they get loose.

If past incidents are any indication, the local authorities will do little or nothing. In one notorious case in Leilani estates a few years ago involving several attacks by the same dog, the victim had to repeatedly demand that the police issue a citation to the dog's owner. When they finally did try to cite the owner, the cops came back and told the victim that they couldn't serve papers on the owner because she "wouldn'd answer the door." This resulted in another round of demands moving up the police food chain for weeks until they were forced to go back and cite the owner. Never heard how it turned out in court, but I don't imagine it was more than a light slap on the wrist because the owner was described as a "dear Auntie" and a community activist.

Although I feel badly that someone was bitten, this is really a cultural difference here vs the mainland. I just pretend that I am living in central/south america- maybe SE asia also (have not been there)- and then the dogs don't upset me as much. You might just try that. I don't think Hawaii is going to change anytime soon. The only benefit personally that I have derived from the different "dog culture" here- is that I am able to let my dog (small non-vicious dog) run around freely. I am however, taking the chance that a pitt might kill my dog- but I have seen my dog run the big dogs off of our property. So, you can view me as "an uneducated, uncaring white person"- or as an "assimilated Hawaiian dog owner". I know personally of two families that are still eating dog here for food.
As big as the Asian culture is in Hawaii I am not surprised at all that dogs are still being eaten. Breaks my heart though...

I to can relate to this problem. About a year ago this family from Alabama moved onto my street in Hawaiian Beaches. From day one their two pit bulls and a rott have been roaming the streets here. Various neighbors have tried talking to this guy to no avail. This redneck hillbilly is gonna be in serious trouble one day if his dogs bite a person.
If I feel a dangerous dog is on my property and can harm myself or my dog, somethings getting shot.

How about a 4 foot stick with a red 'USDA Inspected' stamp on the end? When the newly certified loose dogs return home, it might give their owners something to think about.

What street are you on DesertEagle? I am in Hawaiian Shores over on Manini. I just want to make sure I don't go walking over there if there are dogs running around.
