The problem with gates is that criminals tend to climb over or go around. Haven't heard of too many burglars in wheelchairs or with canes. Plus, many people here seem to get tired of locking/unlocking their gate in the rain and eventually just leave it open - unless they are going to be gone for a day or two. It would be quite easy to watch a place and see the habits of the owner and determine when "closed gate" meant no one was home.
Don't put your house far back on your lot and make it impossible to view it from the road. Then all the burglar needs to do is slip behind your trees/bushes and no one sees them. And hiding a camera doesn't do anything to deter a burglar. Make sure they are visible and overlap in the coverage zones.

Are you a human being, or a human doing?
my set up shoots in 1080p in color and by using 8 cams I can cross shoot so if any one tries to take out a camera I get them doing it from the other cam.

Just get on ebay and find a complete kit with cameras and everything. There really is not too much difference in systems. Except price. A complete 16 camera system with HDD costed me in the 400 dollar range. I purchased a few spools of siamese cable (coax plus 2 wires for camera power) and im good to go. Cameras in trees, cameras behind rocks. cameras all over.

My DH thought there was no really good resolution, as obie stated... until we started looking at the current systems...resolution is now pretty kick, even at night & well, I think that the police also thought that resolution was still in the fuzzy age, until they could see their license on our video...way easy to ID vehicles & it is time stamped...
But with anything, obviously the cameras are visible & can be a mark...and that is why having cloud backup & 2 systems overlap help....
We also have a pretty solid welded 2" al. box framed gate (after our nice little doggie pulled apart our chain link one) but the welder advised us that even a solid one can be destroyed if someone wanted to ram a BFPuna truck through it... both would have damage, but some people just want IN!... Luckily it is doggie proof for us!
Moral: if someone really wants in, they will be able to figure out most any deterrent...
But deterrents do help reduce stuff, esp. the bored kids stuff (as much of our area stuff is)
I am not sure if there is anything that is criminal fool-proof... I don't think that anything is totally...no matter what deterrent, there are cases where it has been breached in the past....
Having a nice combination of deterrents helps reduce a lot of stuff and a good working group of neighbors & an array of deterrents is probably the best scenario...

Yes, a lock only keeps an honest man honest. But the presence of security cams seems to deter a lot of would be thieves. Considering that a lot of people setup motion detection to email the picture to their phones.

No matter which system one may use, one of the best things you can do is to also feed it to an offsite server.

These people would not be so hard to catch in fact some of you must have a good idea who some of them are.IMO.IT just takes a little time and some psycology. If you want catch the robber you must think like the robber. Just like catching a fox you have to make the bait to hard to resist.Temptation becomes to much and caution is thrown to the wind.I doubt any of them are as sly as a fox.If the law refuses to do their job(slap on the wrist) it might not be worth the effort.catching them red handed is far more effective than photos. I dont trap wild animals any more I realise now how cruel it is but as a teenager 70 dollars for red fox was hard to resist and i became very good at it.Those are very practical skills to have and have helped me catch theives in the past.Guns stolen recovered golf clubs stolen recovered no police just one determined angry white man. one was neighbor one was roomate go figure.
