Ebola outbreak continues to cause concern,
#11
Andrew - I think there is also some research going on to create a vaccine for Ebola and it's evolving quite rapidly. I don't have a link unfortunately but will look again tomorrow. I don't think it involved brushing our teeth. In the meantime I hope people do not panic here. Despite all the fear-mongering posted by certain fruitcakes in Puna, from alien spraying, anti-vaccination proposals to Ebola outbreaks, I think we'll just be fine.

I think the holy Shisa moment here is another reason to come round you up in the middle of the night and haul you off to the quarantine area. where no matter if your sick or healthy you will be likely exposed to deadly pathogens. Just at the "hint" of being sick.

Im sure in the course those who are collected will be, euthanized to prevent further suffering. Between the indefinite detention clause DHS buying billions of rounds of ammunition this train ride to oblivion is getting real.

Question I would like to know where would people be taken for quarantine here? Is there facilities to handle say 20,000 Plus people?

I'm shutting everything down at work from home, something broke badly at the summit and we're just about to start some heavy engineering on Monday, so while doing that I had to check in here just to keep my spirits up!

Appreciate the advice, though, think I'll go and watch an episode of Father Ted.

And your advice for us in Puna is what? Hope it's better than brushing our teeth with baking soda and dabbing ourselves with coconut oil. "Yea, its crazy talk" is exactly that.

Tom, NPR has been doing a lot of coverage on the limited outbreak, and yesterday covered the vaccine development, which as you stated is a couple of years out.

One good thing is that though this is a horrible virus, it is not as infectious as most

transmission is only from people who show signs of illness
transmission is only from direct contact with a sick persons bodily fluids, and usually through copious contact (family healthcare workers without our western basic protection & family members doing ritualistic body preparation for burial are the most common transmission routes. The recent western healthcare workers infected were in area with limited resources & high infection rates.)

This virus has also shown no mutational changes so far, which is very good for those that are looking to control it through vaccination.

Most likely remote places like Hawaii, far from the African continent, will have the least likely chance of infection, and the time it takes for anyone to get here from the African continent will be the most effective prevention for Hawaii.

Which is just a jet flight away. We are isolated in the ocean but connected by jet travel to every continent and nation on Earth, only a few hours away.

AIDS started from just one flight attendant, leaving Africa with HIV and arriving on the east coast a few hours later.

This is starting to sound like the movie Outbreak. Much is being made of the exchange of body fluids and prolonged contact but the avian flu has mutated to be air borne now. This is a virus and doesn't respond to antiseptic treatments like bacteria.

Just A jet flight away???? What airline flies from there to here in ONE flight?

That is a critical matter, as there have been infected people on airlines, but none have traveled far before the illness is noted...
unless you have a super sonic jet at your disposal, it would take multiple flights over many hours to fly from the area of infestation to Hawaii.... and most people with those jets are not in the area where this infestation has taken hold....

To compare any 2 viruses without REALLY comparing their effects is not an ideal way of measuring risks... AIDS transmission can occur without the donor party showing symptoms & is a very long duration infection...embola fits neither of those profiles...

And that is also WHY I stated that embola has not shown any mutation, flu viruses are always in a flux of mutation, and it very hard to nail down a vaccine for the "flu of the year"
