Respirators are available at Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, etc for about $40. Buy the ones which are rated for acids, not just paint fumes.

The Civil Defense announcements yesterday said it was vog from the Pu'u O'o vent, which seemed to imply it wasn't from the front of the flow.
Trades will blow it away from Pahoa, toward Kona.

We were smelling it late yesterday down here in Kapoho, a mix of brimstone and forest fire.

This is the link that shows the direction of the vog plumes. The trade winds usually blow them to the south. When the wind shifts, it blows them to a more northish direction. Strong winds keep the plumes at higher altitudes. Right now (Aug 20, 8:30 AM) it shows that there are no winds, so the plumes spread out and stay close to the ground and affect more people throughout the island.

My Dad used to have a coal stove. When I first arrived, after a few months, I caught that familiar smell. Who has a coal stove here? I thought. The next day my coworkers said, isn't the vog bad these days? And I realized what it was. I still smell it. Yesterday in Hilo.
