I hope the new ownership there doesn't substitute "Sunny D" for orange juice.

There was a sign out today. It was rather small, and in a fancy font, but I think it said "Honi Wai"
That'a all I could see as I sped past at nearly the speed limit. twice. ><(((*< ... ><(("< ... ><('< ... >o>

I wanted to bring this topic back, since most of the comments to date here are somewhat negative. Really think they deserve another look if you've been there already, and definitely a try if not. Place is called Honi Wai, on the left travelling toward Volcano, just before Hilo Coffee Mill.
Parking: 4 spaces down the hill behind the restaurant, two just off the highway. Small menu but excellent food. Fast service, nice presentation and very nice staff. Excellent Pastrami sandwiches served panini style. Eggplant on a sesame bun and Portobello sandwiches also very good. Cafe has a good 'vibe' with low music not disturbing conversation and is very clean and comfortable. Pricing is moderate, in line with any of the decent places in the Hilo area. I have no financial interest in this business, but would like to bring it to your attention as being worthy of your patronage.

Honi Wai does, in fact, make very tasty food.
Before condemning any business for their "dangerous driveway" and/or "lack of parking", consider that some of these are only open because their location is grandfathered -- they would otherwise not be allowed to exist under "the rules". County dragged Honi Wai through two years of permit-license-fee-inspection nitpicking, we're lucky they were allowed to open at all. (For comparison, Lucy's Taqueria opened in less than two months. I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for the massive disparity.)

This place is a little gem. The staff are delightful and attentive. It has a lovely ambiance. They keep a selection of Hawaiiana books on a table and I have picked up a number of points of Hawaiian history while enjoying my meal. Everything I have tried has been to my taste and the best I've had on island. These people deserve your attention. I am so afraid we will lose them if we do not show them our love and soon and that would be a shame.

We don't go that way very often, but we ate there several months ago. It was nice. I posted a few pictures on Google Maps. Also to support a local business.
