Definitely worth the extra $80 to skip two drives to Kona and back.

We tie it in with a trip to Costco and maybe a beach that has white sand.

I would walk to Kona to avoid that United flight.

I've taken two trips from HNL on United in the last year and they were much better than American or Alaska. Free in-flight entertainment system, (and free headphones), only two seats on the fuselage sides, full-size handicap bathroom, new, quiet aircraft, etc.

I've never taken a United flight to/from Hilo, maybe that is what you are talking about? Our friend is flying in/out HNL on United and the interisland is handled by Hawaiian all for $888.

The Hilo flight is on a 737-800.

Really cramped, no entertainment and you can't even get a free peanut .

That DOES sound horrible.

An extra 1h to HNL, minimum 2 hour layover, no air conditioning, $9 beers.

I would like to see a third option here.

The last time I took that flight it was a Saturday night and the plane was about 1/3 full. Someone else mentioned the same experience on different Saturday night on another thread. Everybody spread out around the plane, each person got an entire row to themselves. They put the arm rests up and slept all the way to LA. It was difficult to get to the rest room after awhile, when feet started to push into the aisle as passengers stretched out as they slept.

The other alternative for that flight on other days of the week is to book the bulkhead "extra legroom" seat, I think it's about $100 more, but if you can get right behind the bulkhead you have about 2-3 feet of legroom. Other extra legroom seats only have + 4 inches.

If you take the United Sat night flight, don't bother paying extra for Economy Plus. After the lights go out, they don't even say anything when people move up to those seats. Found this out only AFTER paying an extra $180 for our two seats.

Just checked prices from East Coast to Hilo. Got all excited when I saw $300 for outgoing flight. Flight coming back? $850!

Wah, wah, wah.

If there is a decrease in airfare from the mainland to Honolulu, that is still a decrease if your flights from Hawaii island are connected to Honolulu. The choice of direct flights is limited.

Don't worry. Something tells me there will be Virgin direct from mainland to Hawaii island in the not too distant future, Pele willing.

I would add that the Economy Plus bulkhead seats are actually less desirable than the other seats on the Saturday night flight, as as the armrests don't go up. They're the only seats in which you can't raise the armrests, lie down across three seats and get a fairly decent night's sleep. You can still move to the cheap seats though.

Another tip, try not to sit in the back of the plane. The fuselage narrows, and to accommodate the seating pattern they need to narrow the width of those seats. No legroom and no elbow room.
