Native Americans are convicted of felonies at a rate of almost double white Americans, but less than most ethnic minorities.

Conditions vary by tribe, but the major factors minimizing Native American employment in their own casinos are:

1) Most rez casinos are operated by major casino chains (Harrah's, etc.) who bring in their own experienced management and personnel. The tribes rarely push for any sort of hiring preference due to legal issues and a desire to minimize the cultural impact on their rez.

2) It's a bad fit. Most on the rez are farmers or ranchers, are a bit introverted, and are often baffled by outsider behavior. Catering to excitable angry/drunk white people isn't usually their preferred career path.

3) In the cases of the uber-lucrative eastern casinos, their monthly share-of-the-proceedings check exceeds any prospective paycheck.

4) Bad optics. If an Indian wins big, and gets paid by Indians, and everyone else is losing... it looks shady.

Punatics who worry about the failure of an expensive waterborne ferry system are another malahini meltdown waiting to happen. Hawaii dumped the Superferry just in time. The cost of space based interisland transport is about to drastically decrease when the marijuana grow and dispensory operations open their doors. Everyone knows hemp oil byproducts, properly extracted, can be formulated into a stable but super powerful rocket fuel. It's the stuff that will really get you high.

Kona is already a spaceport. As is Kalapana. Add Kahului, Honolulu, and Lihue, and you have the start of a sub-orbital transportation system between the islands that will take passengers to their destination in minutes not hours.

Don't cry for the Superferry 20th century Punaticular ostriches with your eyes glued to a hole in the ground. Thankfully even Punatics won't be able to smoke up all the dispensary grown weed, and other Hawaiian residents can use the volatile oils to really fly. Earth based transport is about to go the way of the Dodo, buggy whip, and other remnants of our past found only in museums.

In the time it took for you to read this post, you could now be on Oahu in a super hemp powered Hawaiian LavaRock-et.

Typical transplant twits. It isn't the Hawaii Superferry anymore, it's so intellectually challenged to get emotionally worked up over something not even connected to Hawaii anymore. More than a few on PW are starting to show elevated malahini meltdown, when you have gone so emo, you are beside yourself. Over a surplus ferry? Punatic psychos.

I am pleased, to some extent, that the "Superferry" discussion has been resurrected. On a smaller scale, it might just work.

Interisland airfare is out of control (sure miss Aloha Airlines, sorry for the O/T), there is no other "ferry" to travel between islands, etc. If the vehicles are not allowed on the ferry, like what currently runs between Maui and Moloka'i, it might be worthy of consideration.

Given the lava flows in Puna, especially the last one that threatened Pahoa, should Hwy130 be covered in 20+ feet of lava, it may be worth having a vessel that could come into Pohoiki or Honolulu Landing. Should lower Puna be cut off for a period of time, options should be weighed. Necessities would be able to reach our communities.

In addition, it would be a beautiful trip, the coastlines are beyond description for the most part (interisland). The income may offset the costs, even after the highway is reopened....perhaps. There has to be a few grants out there to peruse, especially on the Federal level.

One can only hope, and dream of better services for Puna.
