Mahalo, Mr. Weatherford. She is a fine woman, and I wish her well. It is refreshing to see a wahine with morals, values, and integrity, enter this race. It takes a lot of gumption to jump into the "snake pit"! I wish her the best.

Aloha to you, Sir.

JMO.

There are lots of SHANNON MCCANDLESS signs going up in the highway right of ways, not only is this bad form it is also illegal. Anyone that clueless doesn't deserve to be Mayor. Obviously she is not bothering to get permission before putting up signs which is also very rude, to say the least.

Other candidates have full on banners on State property. The KTA intersection in Hilo is the most blatant example. This puts the State road crew in a difficult position of having to remove the signs of political superiors or not doing their job. It also creates a potential traffic hazard.

If you are referring to the undeveloped corner opposite KTA and across from Prince Kuhio, that is private property. Banners appear to be set back out of the ROW. Agree with you on the McCandless signs. I've been told that other, nouveau politicians are just banging in their signs in front of yards at key traffic points and risking homeowner ire. Perhaps it's cost effective, given the sweat equity invested in asking permission, with the only loss you've pissed that voter off and they've thrown your sign away...

For your information:

§264-6 State highway not to be disturbed without permit. No person or government agency, whether federal, state, or county, shall, in any manner or for any purpose do any of the following acts without a written permit from the director of transportation or the director's authorized representative:
(1) Break up, dig up, disturb, undermine or dig under, or cause to be broken up, dug up, disturbed, undermined, or dug under, the right-of-way of any state highway; or

(2) Place, erect, leave, or store any structure, motor or other vehicle, equipment, or any other object wholly or partially within the right-of-way of any state highway; provided that this paragraph shall not apply to the holding or displaying of movable signs, for the purpose of carrying on political campaign activities. [L 1967, c 163, pt of §2; HRS §264-6; am L 1980, c 146, §1; gen ch 1985]

Thanks HiloPuna.

Well I checked out the KTA intersection before the Plaza. It looks like they are ALL in the right of way since they are directly under the utility lines. They are only braced in the private property adjacent to the corner. I guess laws, like taxes, are only for the little people, but I have always hated cheats.

Thank you Petard:
" or any other object wholly or partially within the right-of-way of any state highway; provided that this paragraph shall not apply to the holding or displaying of movable signs, for the purpose of carrying on political campaign activities." I believe this applies to sign waving when there are people present, and not to stationary signs pinned to the ground with no one in attendance. Would that be a correct reading?

How convenient that our prospective leaders are publically demonstrating their disrespect for the laws prior to being elected -- perhaps we can use this as a criteria, somehow.

sign waving when there are people present

Correct: "the right of people to assemble" -- they just happen to be holding signs -- even though it's probably more dangerous to have people dancing around in the right-of-way.

to HiloPuna -
Hoffmann was at the Ruderman/SanBuenaventura legislative wrap-up in Pahoa the other night, and had a talk story at the Eagles last night. Since he decided to run he has attended several other events in Puna that I know of. He is 74 and plays baseball every week, so he won't be 80 while in office, and appears to be in good health.

However, age and health don't necessarily always correlate - young people can have coronaries and strokes too. Vote for platform and political philosophy, experience, skills and talents.

I actually tried to find Petes birthdate before I wrote that comment about he and Harry breaking 80 by the end of their first term. Its not available on his website, I would guess it's not something he wants to emphasize. I was at a meeting in March that Pete attended and I thought I heard him say he was 75, he was talking about softball at the time.
When I wrote that I extrapolated from March 2016 (@ 75) to December 2020 and came up with a probable/potential age of 80, given that he then had 9 months to turn 76. So I might be a few months off, which at 79 could be a big deal !
In my defense, again, I tried to determine his precise age and couldn't. Did he tell you, or the group, he was 74? If so, my bad, and good catch.
