Hawaii County Civil Defense seems to have captured a series of pictures of Capt Shane\s lava tour boat this morning, way too close to the shore/lava. Multiple pics in a row show how dangerously close he was to the shore.

Is there a real problem here or is it government over-regulation? (Just asking.)

He does have a history of violating regulations, including fines. Search shane lava boat distance for an idea. Did you look at the pictures?

Yes. I recall there was some debate a few months back about what was a safe distance (and what wasn't).

"dangerously close"
A matter of opinion. For some more 'adventurous' (or reckless?) it's not close enough. For some very prudent (or overly cautious?) it's never far enough away. It's all a matter of where you draw the line. Some times I wish we were more like Mexico and China where you decide if it's dangerous on your own and live with the consequences. My wife, OTOH, wants things more regulated.

Edit: on another note, it looks like a couple of small black sand beaches have been created if you look at the photos carefully.

I think we were on Shane’s boat. I seem to remember the boat being dark in color.

We were about as close as the boat in the picture.

And I was perfectly fine with that.

Whover's boat it is sure looks waaaaay closer than the Coast Guard's dictated 300 meters......Maybe they don't know meters and thought it was 300 inches....
