There is a date, sometime in July I think, at which point if Harry Kim resigns, his deputy mayor becomes acting mayor. If he leaves office before that date is up there is a special election. It is suspected he will resign, for health reasons, after that date.

I have heard that the date was either June 1 or June 4 - the election filing deadline. If he were to resign or pass after that, Wil Okabe becomes Mayor until the next general election - November 2020.

rior to his current role, Mr. Okabe served as Governor Ige's representative for East Hawai'i. For almost three decades, Mr. Okabe served the State of Hawai'i through the Department of Education in various capacities. He was also the Hawaii State Teachers Association President and worked for the Department of Labor in the Job corps Program.

Good news: we're getting a well-seasoned interim mayor who really knows his way around the government. This might also be bad news.

As to Wil Okabe- hard to tell whether good or bad.
Kind of hard nosed, maybe someone local remembers
from say, coaching, at Hilo HS, I think?

experience running things now, be a sport. There is a
statistical chance that Okabe might be OK.
Okabe does have experience in running a government.

We already didn't have a say, so it's really not a big change.
