Build instead of pay rent

This type of design has been used by homesteaders for a long time for making greenhouses and livestock shelters. They are quick to setup but do require basic safety measures (bending the livestock panels create a perpetually wound "spring"). The other deficiency is that they have little wind resistance without the beams and being correctly anchored. Otherwise they can be blown over similar to a backpacking tent with fiberglass poles. Even correctly anchored etc the steel part can still move or vibrate in the wind which tarps don't like. Some people use foam pipe insulation or even pool noodles on the steel portion rub spots to mitigate this.

I have been a casual observer of the code for many years now and I am certain that the exemptions from code for small buildings specifically prohibit habitation.

It was the founding father's dream for government to tell people how to live on their own property one day... /s

Good luck, and consider how to structure your property ownership to protect yourself in the event you are sued or fined. The risk is probably higher with renters that someone will turn you in.

So, I've stayed at this place in the following link. How is their operation even legal? Yes, its on Maui, but I imagine there would be even stricter laws there.

How is their operation even legal?

Campground is a permissible use which may include any number of buildings so long as they are not fully enclosed.

Where sufficient economic impcat ("tourism revenue") exists, County governments are often willing to help the operation work towards compliance. Kalani was in exactly this situation until the eruption shut them down.

Only $1500.00/night to rent a tiny A-frame with no kitchen. I see they have a weekly rate, I wonder if their monthly rate is $35,000.00/month? And their 'Tentalows' are comparable to a hotel room rates for small families.
