Punaweb Exclusive: New structures on Saddle
#11
And re-written on social media.

Social media is not "history". I was referring to "everything more than 100 years ago", during which time different races came to the islands and displaced those who were already here, up to and including the sugar plantations (where displacement is more driven by economic factors than racial differences).

We are so far down the rabbit hole at this point I can't even guess which parts will matter.

As but one example: our prosecutor is before the ethics board discussing whether it's a conflict of interest to charge lawbreakers with their violations of the law, despite the fact that he did not write the law or issue the citations, and before any prosecution has actually taken place in a court of law. Blocking a public road is a fairly overt act; I don't see where it's subject to a biased interpretation. Those charged have indicated they intend to raise Constitutional issues; if the case is therefore removed to a Federal court, the opinions of mere State or County legal machinery are no longer relevant.

Meanwhile, the costs (that we know of) are around $9M. This is more than half the budget allocated by Governor Ige. I want to believe this means things will be wrapped up in another couple of months, but most likely Ige will just throw more money at the problem, because it's no big deal to just raise taxes again.

Now back to your regularly scheduled drivel...

I was at the hearing. It was more about the appearance of conflict of interest.
Assume the best and ask questions.

"start of"? What is this, a historical retrospective?

What is this "very slippery slope" Tom? A description would be appreciated

One way to look at this: the Ethics Board did not summon the Prosecutor to investigate alleged misdeeds; instead, Mitch went to the Ethics Board and basically asked them for guidance on how to do his job and permission to move forward therewith.

Meanwhile, none of the people impacted by the lava flow have filed an ethics complaint against County for their mismanagement of the recovery effort, which investigation would actually be a meaningful use of the Ethics Board's attention.

Having an ethics board that is not ethical decide who and who cannot be involved in trying court cases based on appearance rather than actual conflicts of interest. It opens the door to more local government corruption. Let a court decide instead.

Courts have decided that TMT has the legal right to build...

You've missed my point entirely, Kalakoa.

I don't dispute that corruption and bias permeates every branch of Hawaii's government - but I would argue that Roth should recuse himself since even the appearance (however slight) of a conflict gives the obstructionists another opportunity of litigate and burden our legal system and divert government resources - our tax dollars - to non-productive and completely worthless activities.
