Whales spotted
#11
There a lot of books which talk about that era in history. Even Mark Twain menitoned it (Hawaiian connection) in his writings. Many of the great whalers from the East Coast of the mainland came all the way around the horn and made Hawaii their base while on long excursions. I learned that from the Whaling Museum in Nantucket. It really suprised me that they went all that way!

Whales were almost extinct especially the humpback, kerosene from the newly discovered oil fields replaced whale oil as a light/heat source! Lahaina was the pacific whaling capital.

I hear there was a whale spotted on the Kona side yesterday. Still waiting to see my first of this winter here in Puna (HPP).

Still no spotted whales. But I remember from previous years that someone asks volunteers to spot for a day, all day, to try to get a whale count. I'd like to give that a go this year. Any idea who or when?

The whale count is a NOAA program run through the Maui Humpback whale Sanctuary. Link:

This is the write up for this years count, which was March 29th... cannot find 2009 date... usually it is run by the Seagrant office at the University here... Sara Peck with Seagrant Kona may have more info on the count...

Around 5:30PM today we saw a young humpback off the HPP seacliffs. It put on a great show breaching many many times. It is our first sighting of the season!

Thanks for the link Carey. I thought you could spot from anywhere but seems it's not the case.

Mahalo for the update Susan, I'll keep an eye out for them!

That is so exciting Susan. I cannot wait to get back to the island to see the whales! Just 48 more days.
