LOL...
My point was that those 2 Cell cards do not work well around here.
It seem that at some time in the past, a Cell Tower was purposed for the area and the residents protested it out of existence.
So I guess they like HawaiiTel around here.

Thanks Damon,
I am working with Melissa & she's great!
FYI, I finally corresponded w/ Oceanic who said that I should enter my phone # & not worry about what my area code is. At the same time per email, it was discovered that there is no cable in Nanawale.
My question is why do they want a phone number that is useless w/o an area code?
But guess w/o potential service, that I don't have to fret over it now [

The actual problem you are facing, is that the phone you are currently using won't reach the 808 area code. I had a problem with my Hawaii Telcom Phone on Oahu not allowing me to access 888 numbers.
Simple solution, find a phone that does allow 808 numbers problem solved. It doesn't sound like an Oceanic problem at all so if there is ranting to be done... it's at your phone provider on the mainland.
Remember, once you get the automated message at Oceanic... Your still going to be messing with their automated system for awhile.
It still might take 2 weeks or longer to get your installation set up. I'm not even sure where you are moving to at this point. Does Oceanic even go to your location?
Ranting won't get you anywhere on this island when it comes to getting things done.
In the meantime, if need be to keep your business running, there are a few internet cafe's that can keep you going for awhile.
Nice website btw.

Does anyone have experience with AWS (Advanced Wireless Service) locally? I've been using it at the places I am staying temporarily in HPP and seems fairly reliable. I use a Sprint Air Card at my construction site in upper Orchidland with some success, although not really very fast.

We have it.
Like others - we went thru the runaround with cable and telephone company's - neither are available in HPP near the ocean and Makuu.
Initially, it was hard to get someone on the phone to talk to - but with patience, we did. Gave them the info. they came out and evaluated. You need to have a line of site from one of their sites to the receiver at your site. The trees on our lot (next door to where we are renting) blocked the signal - but they were coming down for us to build. They said to call when that happened.
A few weeks latter - trees gone - called - scheduled another evaluation - good signal from their 4th & Makuu site. Scheduled an installation the following week.
They install a small receiver box about 8" square - basic install is just to attach it to the house on an eave or such - if necessary they can put it on a pole on the roof - which they had to do for us - no roof penetrations - so far, no problems works great. Very pleasant experience - nice people.
Time will tell - I'm listening?

I have used Verizon and Sprint, both worked the same here in HA. But I use an external antenna, car type mounted on the roof. Sprint has unlimited downloads and Verizon has a 5 gig a month limit, at least that is how it was 6 months ago. 1.1k downloads and 100 upload speed, both do about the same.
The line of sight tower wireless is way overpriced and the best download speed they can get is 700. I was quoted 800 dollars to come
out put up an antenna.
Does anyone know if or when Mobi will be coming here, they have a much better price on their plan?

First of all, welcome to the "no cable or DSL where I live" club. Its a club who's membership is unfortunately not getting any smaller in Puna.
Mobi is here now but their coverage is very limited as of now. Sprint has adopted the 5gb monthly limit along with Verizon and AT&T. I believe they started in July but I'm not sure. I will say I have gone over that a few times, once as high as 8gb, and nothing has happened yet. I think it is one of those things they may "reserve the right" to enforce. This is an important consideration if you decide to go with one of those three companies. 5 gb can go fast in a month's time if you are using it for work, or even just personal internet. Some companies may terminate your service or even charge you extra for data over 5gb. Make sure you ask how they handle it before signing up. I have been pretty happy with Sprint for the last year. I have a USB modem plugged into a special wireless router that I ordered online. It even works for voip or Xbox Live service on my Xbox 360. I use a signal amplifier since the better signal you get, the faster your speeds. I average around 1100 kbps download and 200 kbps upload. They all have the same pricing and similar speeds. Coverage where you use it should be the biggest factor on which is best for you.
I used to have AWS before switching to Sprint. Everybody I dealt with was really nice. Their speeds were fast at times, but varied a lot, which didn't work so well for my Xbox. The setup can be expensive depending on what they have to do to catch a signal. Mine was $300 to put the reciever on a small metal arm on my roof. I paid $50 a month and speeds ranged from 200 kbps to about 1500 kbps but were al over the place in between. One other annoyance was that you had to log in to the service from your browser and it would only keep you logged in for a day at the most. This definitely makes it tough for anything that requires an "always on" connection. Keep in mind it has been a year and some things may be different now. They do have different speed and price options. Overall I would definitely recommend them if wireless data service thru a cell provider isn't available. One big advantage for the cell service is you can take it with you on vacation or anywhere else you can get a signal.
I hope this info helps somebody out there. I'm always on the lookout for what services are available and have learned a lot in my endless quest for the best possible internet connection.

Adam, could you post a link for the wireless router with the usb connection. Right now I have my wife's laptop bruetoothed to mine to share internet, but I would rather have the router. I have looked before but couldn't find one.
Thanks, Scott

Mine is made by Cradlepoint, though there are a couple other companies that make them. The model number is ctr-350 I think. This one is very small and simple. It only has one ethernet connection and no antenna, though I have no problems with the wifi signal reaching throughout the house. It automatically connects to service as long as the router is plugged in which is a nice advantage over using the modem directly. I honestly can't remember which site I bought it through. Do a search for EVDO router and you should find lots of info on this and other more fancy models.

Thanks, Adam. Adding EVDO to the search did the trick.
