WARNING HPP Residents
#11

Bob, the guy was clearly "stalking" the neighborhood. It has nothing to do with the color of his truck. Unfortunately, my one Pit Bull was 'sawing logs'. Otherwise her bark & looks will scar away most.
But make no mistake, like I said the other day. My neighbor approached him with the idea of just being neighborly(ask if he needed help, or directions) and the guy took off upon being approached. For me that's proof enough that he's up to know good!

Let's get together and over grow the government!!!!

Maybe he thought your friend was a drugged out, wife beating criminal and was going to car-jack his truck or that others criminals were going to rob him, so he took off with the idea of staying alive? He was in PUNA - criminals, duggies, low-lifes - the crime ridden ghetto of the island - Maybe that was proof enough for him that your friend was up to no good!

Good notion, Bob Orts!!! This is EXACTLY the message I was trying to get across.

While my friend is looking for property, he may be driving slow, or stopped while writing notes. He may be wary of angry looking neighborhood "perps" approaching him and drive off to avoid confrontation. Feel free to make note of his presence, or take a picture but please,"NO SHOOT".

Kudos to you as well, Greg. I can think of few things more horrific than to be accused of a crime you not only didn't commit, but that you are opposed to. A PERSON IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

I have to put this out there one more time:

If these issues really bother people, they should join the Neighborhood Watch. We are begging for active new members in HPP. After registering and attending a few meetings, members are given official neon yellow t-shirts and magnetic signs to go on cars. Bear and I frequently go around our area on foot wearing our HPPNW shirts or in a marked vehicle. If we approach someone, they know what we are doing and why. We get shakas, waves, thumbs up, and pleasant, thankful conversation from neighbors and passers-by over 99% of the time. Less than one percent of the time, we get stink-eye or someone running away like hell. A couple of weeks ago a guy in a 20 year old mostly bondo Nissan pickup was cruising up and down Railroad slowly with mud over his license plate. When we appeared in our NW t-shirts, he drove past us and spun his tires sending a cascade of gravel our way. He then sped away and hasn't been seen since in the area. Was he a "perp?" Maybe.

We have the beginnings of some email and phone trees for quick notification in a few areas of HPP, including Railroad and one block near the shore. We need more of these, but we need people willing to help.

If all the people who complain about the crime or ineffectiveness of Neighborhood Watch in HPP would PARTICIPATE instead of just complaining, we might get somewhere. It's not hard. It doesn't require large amounts of time. It does require a willingness to act rather than just talk about doing something.

Rant over,
Jerry

BTW.... I will be driving slowly around HPP looking at real estate in a few weeks. It will be me and Lynn and we will be in a Jeep Wrangler. Please do not take shots at us or anything. We are nice people. ;-) We may have a little perv in us but are definitely not perps.

Paul, members of NW participate at varying levels. We meet the first Saturday of every month at the HPP Activity Center at 9AM. In March, however, we will meet at 8AM because that is one of three times a year we do litter pickup as a community service. Coffee, donuts, gloves, and trash bags will be provided, and members work in pairs to pick up litter on two or three blocks of one of the main roads. I should be clear that this is not a business meeting for in-depth discussion. It is, however, a good way to meet some of the members.

Typically, members are expected to attend at least half the meetings each year and to help with distribution of crime prevention pamphlets immediately following some of the meetings. This is done at the roadside at the main entrances to HPP. Not everyone does this every time because there are sometimes more people than is really necessary.

Some members choose to do informal patrols on foot wearing official t-shirts or in their own cars with HPPNW magnetic signs. Some leave the signs on their cars all the time to make an enhanced presence, others do not. We are currently in the process of raising the patrol activity to a higher level. Our Community Police Officer will be training interested individuals in the near future to do more formal patrols with more structure. These will be coordinated and occasionally done in conjunction with on duty police patrols.

Not everyone is comfortable doing patrols, so it is by no means mandatory. Anyone who wants to help on whatever level they can is welcome to join. Taking things to the next level of energy and commitment has not been all smooth sailing. I have to be honest and say that some long-term members have not been enthusiastic about some of the proposed changes, and there have been some sharply worded discussions. The general trend, though, has been toward more activism and inclusiveness. I invite everyone in HPP to contribute on whatever level they can.

Cheers,
Jerry
