Ocean Sushi Deli has some really great box deals (Jimbo likes B & C) I find that one of any of the rolls is plenty...

I'm not a big fan of local plate so that limits me. Last time I got Verna's food a stomach bug got me.
I like Thai food but it's not cheap. Better prices at lunch though! I live nearer to Hilo, so no Puna places on my list only due to the drive, would love to try more of them. In Hilo, I tend to pick Maui tacos unless I've been on a Mexican kick at home. I'm not much into meat, and the surf burritos are 4.99 now, a LOT of food, and they have good salsas. It's wholesome food. They have mango pork now for the meat folks. Rarely do I sit and eat there, unless I'm shopping. Zero ambience. Very convenient to the movies though. I have been known to go to Panda Express because unlike L&L they don't use MSG, and it's not a bad way to get vegetables, and it's clean. I am not a fan of Chinese food really, just have a few things that I like. That place near the KTA is near my old house so I've tried it, once, was not impressed. Island Natural steam table is awfully expensive to my mind. Sandwiches are OK. My favorite lunch stop was O'Keefe's bakery. It wasn't BUDGET but so yummy. Bummer that it's gone!

quote: Sum Leungs is the name. Literally right next door to Hiros... GOOD, local style, chinese food. Fairly inexpensive... $8 flat for a 3-choice plate lunch and they LOAD you up. White rice, fried rice, noodles, or half-half w/ the 3 choices is a meal for the whole day... One of the few places in town where you can get a whole roasted duck-$22 Half a duck-$11... You can also bring in whole fish to them and they will cook it Chinese style or fry it whole for you. Cool stuff...

I love Subway, $5 subs. Healthy, cheap, available. Also, I go to KTA for their ready made chef salad for $4.50 or splurge for sushi $6. Or, Luigi's soup & pizza or the best Caesar salad I've ever had. Then I take my feast to Queen L park & eat al fresco oceanfront. I have researched the healthiest least expensive way to eat in Hilo & this is the best I came up w/.

ooh, i like luigi's, too! the caesar ahi wrap is delicious!
SD: will try SL's next to hiro's soon. the leung's on the way to the airport was NOT good at all imo. i give nori's and kawamata's a so so. that's probably because we used to own our own okazu-ya/local plate lunch restaurant. hilo lunch shop is okay, but we prefer lucy's (spelling) up there on ka'umana drive. nice people but they don't make maki or cone sushi on a regular basis. too time consuming we were told today.
