Farmers Markets and Others Targeted-Tax Squad!

Gee mdd7000, I get it now - my obvious bleeding heart liberal ideals have got to really bug ya.

I mean, with all your anti-government, anti-Mexican illegal, anti-twinkie eating, anti-Islam holiday, anti-tax raising, SUV-loving, Linda Lingle supporting, Obama-hating self - how do you find peace in this world? LOL Oh, and lemme guess, I’ll bet you really like Rush Limbaugh right?

I admire you for keeping your finger on the pulse of industry, finance and government. It takes a lot of energy to be so well informed.

It’s a shame that Hawaii does not meet your informational requirements.

AND since you are so hellbent on quoting everyone else - here’s a few of YOUR quotes to highlight your ideals. There's definitely a theme running through your threads:

"This is almost too stupid to be true.

HONOLULU -- Hawaii's state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate "Islam Day" -- over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

from foxnews.com...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/05/...islam-day/

So when is Christian Day? Jewish Day? etc.?"

"Doesn't the county already have an established use policy for the internet? If so, all they have to do is start enforcing it.
As a taxpayer, I would be upset to find out that some county (or state or federal) worker was getting paid overtime when they also spent part of their time surfing the internet."

These "twinkie eating, gardening, growers" tend to have GUNS. Then, if they or their buyers, drive while under the influence of this "harmless" product, and someone dies in the resulting accident, is it still OK to you if they continue to grow and use this "harmless product? I knew (past tense) several people who died as a result of a traffic accident caused by this "harmless drug". Please spare me the "harmless drug" crap.

Rob, can you close this thread? It didn't go the way I originally intended. I wanted to compare people's responses to excessive noise - helicopters vs coquis - and what people did to get rid of the noise via complaints to the government.mdd7000 8/28/09

Are you suggesting another (duplicate) set of corrupt and inept people bent upon creating their own power base and family wealth be created? How will that help other than to cause additional reasons for new and higher taxes?

In researching our move to the island, I have noticed the lack of government info and services that are offered via the web. Hawaii could be some much more efficient - saving significant tax dollars - if they came up to the speed of some of the other states.

I was stunned to read about all the steps involved in getting my drivers license and cars inspected and licensed. The county web page advises calling the county office to get the information! That is a huge time waster for government employees.

I know, everyone says "Don't tell someone in Hawaii how it is better somewhere else" but.... Illinois lets you do almost all drivers license activities via the web, including renewal. No need for a visit to their offices. I just renewed my license for 5 more years and will get my new license in the mail any day now.

Side Note:
My mother (age 67) has a computer, uses email, plays on-line bridge, etc. but absolutely refuses to buy anything on-line. She says someone will steal her money. So, when she wants something, I have to go to her house and buy the item for her, with my freakin' credit card! Of course, it is apparently OK if someone steals my money....

My 8th grader just spent a semester learning HTML. All students in 8th grade take this class. They also make their own web site as a part of their grade. I am really amazed at how much he learned and what he accomplished. I should be subbing him out when I get to the island for web design. Maybe he can make me some money for a change! Smile

The problem here is the government's waste - way too many friends and family are employed - that push paperwork around and award bids to those same friends and relatives. The governor should have pushed for a 10% reduction in admin staff. At the least, a complete hiring freeze is in order.

Raising the GET (highest in the nation?) and/or raising the sales tax hurts those with the least amount of money the most. They are regressive taxes. Those already struggling do not need to pay additional taxes. Cutting spending and waste has to be the first choice for government, not the last choice.

There is not a single government agency (state or federal) that has no more room or ability to make itself more efficient.

How many of you have driven any of the latest Big 3 autos? I'll bet not many of you have. You would be very impressed with the quality and the longevity has improved so drastically it is almost scary. I hope GM can come back, despite Obama's blundering and telling them what they need to produce, rather than producing what the public wants to buy.

And with less than 2 weeks before scheduled furloughs...I think the governor has no choice now but to lay off about 10,000 state employees. Bad decision by the unions(unless your a senior state employee with many years of service...then it's a good decision because you get to keep your job with no salary cut)

Yes there were some gray areas with regard to the governor ordering furloughs (but she was just trying to save jobs)....but now there is no gray area for the governor to order mass layoffs! And she will(she's required by law to have a balanced budget)! And if you think Aloha Airlines 2000 layoffs caused a commotion... wait until this happens!

HUH? It's still a tax. Hawaii also taxes all services - most states don't do that. Hawaii also taxes the tourists whom the state relies upon, very heavily. Oh, wait, don't forget the income tax! Overall, Hawaii is one of the most heavily taxed states.

It is worse in Texas because of the major impact that illegals from Mexico have on the state. Take the illegals out of the surveys and I'll bet the rate is dramatically improved.

if they want to find "cash," businesses, they just need to check the postings on craig's list. i see "cash," job offers there daily. seems like it would be pretty easy to bust them. and besides, the cash job offers on craig's list are laughable for the work they're asking...

How nice of "Chuysmom" to go back and delete her own posts so that others cannot see what she typed and why I responded as I did. Then, she posts small tidbits of some of my own posts from other threads - and at times the words she attributes to me are not even mine as I was quoting others. Of course, no mention of that either.

Anyhow, nice smear job, Chuysmom. Like I have said before, you always know when liberals are wrong because they start making personal attacks instead of using facts to back up their ideas and thoughts.

ric: Nicely stated.

Some ones "friend" just got laid off and needs a job. The cost to run this would be 100/1000 times the income so it has to be a good old boy deal.

Carrie... "You go girl!"

Here is the truth, in our society there have always been bartering and cash under the table. Try as they may to stop it, it happens. Seems like a while ago someone was even talking about printing "Puna Cash" that would work like a bartering system.

I love the farmers and everyone has a right to sell their own junk at a flea market or garage sale... however, when it becomes a business, they should be paying taxes. Hawaii has an unusual taxing system compared to most states, taxing EVERYTHING. In some cases it does seem unfair. Like Carrie is going to have to charge tax on her cleaning services and when I sell my ceramics to galleries here I charge tax and then the customer is charged the tax on the retail price again. Tax paid on rent is a new idea to me, when I saw those ads in the paper I was thinking "huh? Plus Tax???" but it is the way our system works.

Personally, I think our state and county would better benefit by cutting some wasteful spending like school administration and excess state and county employees. The truth of the matter a serious study would have to be done to find that wasteful spending and to determine where they really can cut costs on employees and that would cost more money,so I do not see that happening anytime soon.

Spending money on cracking down on farmer's seems like a paltry sum when there are probably a lot bigger fish in the sea. Maybe they should spend some $$ cracking down on delinquent property tax payers, vacation rental and illegal B & B owners or audit some income tax returns instead. There is probably a lot of "found" money out there for the state, but going after hundreds of small time tax payers also requires a huge amount of administration and overseeing. Do we really have the staff to handle that? Is it worth the cost of hunting all of them down and then auditing them to be sure that they catch every penny? Is it even possible?

I am with Jerry, I do not think that food should be taxed... better yet, locally grown food. Why don't we petition the Governor to make every consumable food product grown in hawaii tax exempt? That might actually encourage people to shop locally and that is better for the local economy in the end.

devany

Everyone knows Chicago is a tax haven Mella.[Wink] It must be Hawaii's version of "off shore banking."

I lived there 15 years and never heard of the area code 309. City of Chicago only has two area codes, I just double checked, 312 and 773. The 773 area code was started when we lived there, it was for the area North of Lincoln Park. Surrounding suburbs are still 847, 708, 630, 331 and 224. 309 is actually downstate in Peoria. FYI, there is Chicago and then there is the rest of IL, so let's not confuse 309 with 312! [Wink]
